Being a single mum comes with its unique joys—but also its challenges. Between work, childcare, and personal commitments, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and on the verge of burnout. Over the years, I’ve learned that planning my weeks carefully is the key to staying balanced, keeping my sanity, and making time for both my daughter and myself. Here’s how I do it.

Why Planning is Essential for Single Mums

When you’re managing a household, a career, and a toddler all on your own, it can feel like there are never enough hours in the day. I’ve found that taking just a bit of time to map out my week helps me:

  • Stay on top of commitments

  • Reduce stress and prevent burnout

  • Make room for personal time

  • Ensure my daughter feels secure with routines

Planning isn’t about controlling every minute—it’s about creating a framework that allows life to flow more smoothly.

My Tools for Weekly Planning

I rely on a combination of digital and physical planning tools:

  1. Phone Calendar: All appointments, work shifts, and important events go in here. It sends reminders, which keeps me on track.

  2. Physical Calendar: We check this daily with my daughter. It’s a visual reminder of our week, and even though she’s young, she enjoys knowing what’s coming up.

  3. Keep Notes App: For smaller tasks or social media planning, I keep checklists in my phone. It’s perfect for jotting down ideas as they come.

Using both digital and physical tools ensures nothing slips through the cracks—and it helps me stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

How I Plan My Weeks

I like to map out my month first so I can anticipate busy periods or special events. Then, I plan each week with focus on my personal time, work, and my daughter’s activities.

Here’s a snapshot of my weekly routine:

  • Monday: I take my daughter to daycare and return home to focus on planning my blogs and Instagram content for the week. This includes brainstorming posts, taking photos, and scheduling captions. This day can feel stressful because I always wonder, “Do I have enough time to fit it all in?” but having a clear plan helps.

  • Tuesday–Friday: Work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. I drop my daughter at daycare before work and pick her up afterward. These days are mostly structured, which makes the routine predictable and less stressful.

  • Evenings: Personal time is usually in the evenings. I unwind with TV and occasionally extra blog planning if needed. Even short periods of personal time make a huge difference in avoiding burnout.

  • Weekends: Weekends are more flexible. Weather permitting, I try to take my daughter out occasionally, like visiting the Aquatarium in Brockville, so she isn’t stuck inside all the time.

Planning doesn’t mean scheduling every single minute—it’s about creating a rhythm that balances responsibilities with self-care.

Tips to Avoid Burnout

As a single mum, preventing burnout is crucial. Here are the strategies that work for me:

  1. Plan, Plan, Plan: Knowing what’s coming up keeps my mind organized and reduces stress.

  2. Set Aside Personal Time: Even small pockets of time in the evenings make a big difference.

  3. Use Checklists: Apps like Keep Notes help me track tasks without relying solely on memory.

  4. Be Flexible: While planning is essential, I leave room for spontaneity, especially on weekends.

  5. Prioritize Self-Care: Even watching TV can be self-care if it helps me recharge.

Remember, avoiding burnout doesn’t require perfection—it requires awareness and consistent routines that work for you and your child.

Final Thoughts

Weekly planning as a single mum isn’t just about schedules—it’s about protecting your energy, managing stress, and creating space for both your child and yourself. It may take a few weeks to get your rhythm right, but once you do, life feels a little more manageable.

By planning ahead, keeping track of tasks, and intentionally making time for self-care, you can avoid burnout and actually enjoy the moments with your little one.
