There was a time when leaving the house with my daughter felt like preparing for a weekend away.
I had nappies packed for every possible emergency, bottles, extra outfits, snacks, wipes, toys, blankets—you name it, I probably packed it.
Now that my daughter is four and fully potty trained, things have definitely become easier. I no longer need to carry around half the house every time we leave. That being said, mum life means you’re never completely hands-free.
These days I carry two very different bags depending on where we’re going: my everyday handbag and my daughter’s bag for longer outings.
And somehow, both still end up full.
My Everyday Spring Handbag
My everyday handbag is brown and comes with a crossbody strap, which is essential when you’re juggling mum life.
I love it because:
- It’s a great size without feeling bulky
- It has two compartments so I can somewhat stay organised
- I can wear it across my body while chasing after my daughter
I tend to stick with one handbag for the entire season because if I switch bags too often, I inevitably forget something important.
For everyday errands or daycare pickups, this is what stays in my bag:
Lip chap
A non-negotiable, especially during those weird spring days where the weather changes every few hours.
Lipsticks
I don’t carry a full makeup bag, but I do like having lipstick with me for quick touch-ups.
Wet wipes
Mums understand why wipes remain necessary long after the baby years are over.
Sticky hands? Spilled snacks? Mystery messes? Wipes solve everything.
Nail clipper pack
This may seem random, but I always keep one with me just in case. There’s nothing worse than dealing with a broken nail while you’re out.
Reusable water bottle
Spring means more outings, errands, and time spent outdoors, so staying hydrated is important.
What I Pack In My Daughter’s Bag
Although I don’t use a traditional diaper bag anymore, I still keep a separate bag packed for longer outings, weekend trips, meals out, or events.
Here’s what stays in her bag:
Spare outfit
This became a permanent item after one outing where I forgot spare pants and immediately regretted it.
Lesson learned.
Change of underwear
Potty training may be complete, but accidents can still happen occasionally, especially during long outings.
Wipes
Again—always useful.
Snacks
A hungry child can turn a nice outing into chaos very quickly.
Drinks
Always packed and ready to go.
Toys
I usually bring a few small toys to keep her entertained when we’re out.
Small first aid kit
Because toddlers somehow find ways to get minor bumps and scrapes anywhere.
LifeVac
One emergency item we keep on hand is a LifeVac device we purchased from Amazon.
It’s designed to help in choking emergencies, and while I hope I never need it, having it gives me peace of mind.
What I No Longer Pack
This might be my favourite section because it reminds me how much easier life has become compared to the baby stage.
I no longer carry:
- Diapers
- Bottles
- Formula
- Bulky baby blankets
- Endless outfit changes
Those early mum years require so much preparation, so reaching this stage feels like a small victory.
The Most Random Thing In My Bag
For some reason, I currently have one of those little drink stoppers for hot Starbucks coffees.
The funny part?
I don’t even drink Starbucks hot drinks.
I have absolutely no explanation for why it’s still there.
Mum Life Means Being Prepared
Even though my daughter is getting older and I’m carrying less than I used to, being a mum means always thinking ahead.
You pack for spills, hunger, boredom, accidents, and every random situation in between.
And somehow…you still forget something occasionally.
But compared to the baby years?
I’ll happily take carrying fewer bags.
What’s In Your Mum Bag?
Mum bags look very different depending on what stage of motherhood you’re in.
If you’re in the baby phase, you’re probably carrying far more than I am right now—and I completely understand because I’ve been there.
If you’re in the toddler or preschool stage like me, you may have noticed your bag is getting a little lighter (even if snacks and wipes still seem to follow you everywhere).
I’d love to know—what’s one item you always keep in your handbag or diaper bag that you can’t leave the house without?
