Evenings in our house are a mix of winding down, cuddles, and quiet moments. As a single mum, I’ve learned how important a simple nighttime routine can be. It helps my daughter feel settled and gives me time to recharge after a long day.
Tidying Up and Preparing for Bed
Our nighttime routine starts around 6pm, right after dinner. Once the kitchen is tidy, we clean up my daughter’s toys. This step helps the house feel calm. It also signals that the busy part of the day is over.
Tidying early makes the evening feel less rushed. I find it easier to relax once everything is in its place.

Bath Time and Mother-Daughter Bonding
On bath nights, we start the water around 6:20pm. My daughter loves bubbles and playing with her bath toys. Her laughter during bath time is one of my favorite parts of the day.
After her bath, we slow things down. We spend a few quiet minutes together. I apply lotion, give her a gentle massage, and enjoy lots of cuddles. These moments help her feel safe and loved. They also help both of us unwind.

Pajamas, Books, and Preparing for the Morning
By 7pm, pajamas are on and we head to her room. We read books together until about 7:30pm. This routine helps her relax and prepares her for sleep. I love watching her settle in under the covers.
While she gets comfortable, I prepare overnight oats for the next morning. This small habit makes mornings easier. It also feels like a simple form of self-care.

Me-Time and Evening TV
Once my daughter is asleep, usually by 8pm, I head downstairs. This is my time to relax. I sit on the couch and watch TV without distractions.
Lately, I’ve enjoyed shows like His & Hers on Netflix and The Steal on Prime. Watching something familiar helps me switch off after the day. I sometimes dim the lights or make a cup of tea to make the space feel cozy.

Late-Night Stretch and Pilates
Around 10pm, we head upstairs. I check on my daughter and make sure she is warm and comfortable. I also take my nightly supplements.
Before getting into bed, I do a 10-minute Asian Pilates session. I do this most nights as part of my fitness goals. The gentle movement helps release tension and prepares my body for rest.
Scrolling, Slowing Down, and Sleep
After Pilates, I get into bed and scroll on my phone. This is usually when I start to feel tired. Once my eyes feel heavy, I turn off the lights. I usually fall asleep around 11pm.
Having a predictable routine helps my evenings feel calm. It gives structure to the day and helps me unwind at my own pace.
A Gentle Reminder for Single Mums
My nighttime routine is not perfect. Some nights are harder than others. There are evenings when my daughter needs extra comfort or another story. That’s okay.
If you’re a single mum, my advice is simple. Create small moments of peace where you can. Tidy earlier. Prep for the next day. Take even ten minutes for yourself. These small habits can make evenings feel calmer and more manageable.
