As the year comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on everything this chapter held — the challenges, the progress, and the quiet moments that mattered most. This year felt mentally adventurous and, despite how hard it often was, genuinely hopeful.
It wasn’t an easy year. In many ways, it was harder than the last. But it was also the year I stopped waiting for the “right time” and started building something for myself — one step at a time.
A Challenging Year Filled With Growth
This year asked a lot of me. Launching Life of Gem in April was exciting, but also exhausting. I quickly learned that building a blog isn’t just about writing — it’s about decisions, patience, and trusting your vision.
Finding the right website designer took longer than expected. I knew how I wanted the blog to look and feel, and I didn’t want to compromise. There were moments of frustration and doubt, but once everything finally came together, it felt worth the wait.
Alongside the blog, I spent much of the year job hunting while volunteering two days a week. Balancing motherhood, unpaid work, applications, and creative energy wasn’t easy. Some days felt overwhelming, and other days felt quietly productive. Both counted.
Looking back now, I can see how much resilience this season required — and how much it gave me in return.
Motherhood Milestones That Defined the Year
My daughter is now three and a half — going on ten, as she likes to say. This year brought a milestone I’ll always remember: learning to use the toilet and no longer needing a diaper at daycare.
It was a huge achievement for her, and a proud moment for me. These transitions remind me how quickly this stage of life moves. One minute you’re navigating nappies, and the next you’re watching your child confidently take another step toward independence.
At the same time, motherhood this year has taught me a lot about patience. My daughter is full of spunk, confidence, and strong opinions — and so am I. Learning to meet her independence with understanding rather than control has been a growing experience for us both.
Letting Go of Control and Trusting Independence
One of the biggest personal shifts this year has been learning not to hover. I’m actively working on letting go of being a helicopter parent and trusting that my daughter is capable, aware, and learning through experience.
Instead of rigid rules, we’ve developed quiet boundaries — like staying within the garden and not passing the house toward the road. These invisible boundaries have helped me realise that independence doesn’t mean lack of care. It means guiding while giving space.
Watching her grow has been both comforting and challenging, but it’s shown me that she’s doing better than I sometimes think.
Building Life of Gem One Step at a Time
Launching Life of Gem was one of my proudest accomplishments this year. Since April, I’ve learned more than I ever expected — from basic design skills to consistency and content planning.
I’m proud that I’ve been able to:
-
Post twice a week
-
Slowly grow a genuine audience
-
Learn what resonates with my readers
This year also marked an important milestone beyond blogging. My first product, Starting Fresh: A Single Mum’s Guide to Thriving Through Separation and Relocation, launched as an ebook. That project represents so much of my journey — rebuilding, relocating, and finding stability again.
Alongside the ebook, I created:
In the coming year, I’ll be adding a Spring Checklist and a Summer Checklist to complete the seasonal series.
Content Creation Challenges and Lessons Learned
If there’s one thing I struggled with, it was deciding what to write about. Coming up with fresh topics while staying authentic can be surprisingly hard.
Recently, I’ve started researching SEO (Search Engine Optimization) keywords, and it’s already helped me feel more focused. Knowing what other single mums are actively searching for gives me direction and reassurance that the content I’m creating is useful and relevant.
Fashion posts have also stood out as something readers genuinely enjoy, which has encouraged me to keep blending lifestyle with real-life experiences.
The Small Moments That Meant the Most
This year wasn’t defined by big events, but by small, grounding moments:
-
Quiet coffee walks
-
Simple rural routines
-
Evenings that felt calm instead of rushed
What truly stayed with me, though, was the feedback from readers. Hearing comments like “I really enjoyed this post” reminded me why I started this blog in the first place — to connect, to share, and to make single motherhood feel a little less isolating.
And on the hardest days, nothing brought me back to centre faster than my daughter’s laughter and cuddles.
Lessons I’m Carrying Into the New Year
This year taught me that persistence is key. When something doesn’t work — whether it’s a blog layout, a plan, or a season of life — it doesn’t mean you stop. It means you adjust and continue.
I’m leaving behind dwelling on the negative and carrying forward:
-
Consistency
-
Patience
-
Trust in the process
Growth doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.
Looking Ahead With Anticipation
As I look toward the year ahead, I’m hoping for:
-
A side hustle
-
Continued growth for Life of Gem
-
New friendships and deeper connections
I want next year to feel exciting, interesting, adventurous, and emotionally relaxing.
If I had to choose a word to carry forward, it would be anticipation — with a sense that something stupendous is slowly unfolding.
This year was hard, but it was purposeful. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to move forward.
