This Canada Day, I’m keeping things simple—and honestly, I’m looking forward to it.
Since moving from a busy city to the quieter town of Brockville February of 2024, I’ve started to appreciate how powerful a slower pace can be. As a single mum, my priorities have naturally shifted. Life feels different here—in a good way. It’s calmer, less hectic, and there’s space to breathe. And when it comes to holidays like Canada Day, I’ve found that the more low-key they are, the more meaningful they become.
Celebrating Simply, With Purpose
Our Canada Day plan? We’re staying home. I’m setting up a little outdoor play area for my daughter—nothing fancy, just a space filled with joy and laughter. She’ll have her water station (a big favourite!), her splash pad (my water baby), a collapsible tunnel, a cozy mat to rest on, a tent to play in, and of course, our trusty bubble machine. We’ll decorate the house with Canadian flags, and that will be enough. More than enough.
It’s a far cry from the busy events I used to go to—crowds, fireworks, packed schedules. And while those memories are special in their own way, I’m at a point in life where ease and connection feel more valuable than hustle.
Letting Go of the Pressure
There can be this unspoken pressure to “do something big” on a holiday. To go out. To catch the fireworks. To make the day feel extra. But the truth is: you don’t have to go places or attend large celebrations in order to celebrate. Sometimes the most beautiful memories are made in your own backyard (or right on your front porch), surrounded by the people who mean the most.
Being among family, in a space that feels safe and joyful—that’s the real celebration.
A Little Moment That Meant a Lot
The other day, we set up the splash pad early—my daughter’s squeals of joy filling the yard as she played in the cool water. After a while, she started to get chilly, so I wrapped her up in a towel and pulled her onto my lap. We sat there together, drying off in the warm sun, and shared a simple lunch: tiny marmite sandwiches, some fruit, and those poppables she loves. Nothing elaborate, but it felt like such a moment.
There we were—just the two of us, outside, wrapped in the summer air and each other’s company. It was quiet, easy, and exactly what I needed.
Why Low Key Feels More Meaningful
Slower celebrations give us the chance to be present. They help us connect with ourselves, with our loved ones, and with the day itself. And in a world that’s constantly telling us to do more, I think there’s power in choosing less.
And yes, I still feel proud to be Canadian. You can see that pride around town too—people are showing it in their own way, from lawn signs to decorations. It doesn’t have to be loud to be real.
If You’re Looking to Celebrate Simply…
If you’re feeling like a quieter Canada Day might be the right fit for you this year, here are a few ideas:
- Set up a backyard play zone – water stations, bubbles, tents… simple and fun.
- Have a picnic – even just on your front step or living room floor.
- Decorate your space – flags, red and white crafts, or even a themed snack table.
- Write a gratitude note – to yourself, your child, or someone who’s helped you recently.
- Take a walk in nature – enjoy the beauty around you.
- Slow down – read a book, play with your kids, or just sit in the sun.
