Halloween has always been one of my favourite times of year to decorate — it’s playful, a little spooky, and full of imagination. I love how it brings out that childlike excitement in everyone, especially when you’ve got little ones around. But let’s be honest — when you’re on a budget (and juggling a toddler), it can feel like a lot of work to make your home look festive without going overboard.
The good news? You don’t need to transform your house into a Pinterest-perfect haunted mansion to feel the Halloween spirit. With a mix of reusing what you already have, adding a few affordable touches, and embracing the cosiness of the season, you can create a festive space that feels warm, fun, and family-friendly.
Bringing Back Our Favourite Décor
This year, I decided to keep things simple and stick with our trusted decorations from last year — sometimes the best setups are the ones that already feel like “home.”
Our main feature is a large web hung from the eavestrough over our front window — it’s the first thing you notice when you walk up to the house, and it adds that perfect touch of spooky charm. I’ve scattered a few small decorative spiders across the web to make it come alive (without making it too scary for little ones).
On the ground below, I’ve added a collection of Halloween-themed leaf bags, which were such an easy and affordable way to fill out the space. It’s amazing how just a few stuffed bags can make the yard feel festive and full.
To tie everything together, I brought out some of my favourite autumn touches — a bale of hay, corn sheaf, and bright chrysanthemums that give the display that warm, fall feeling. We’ve also set out several pumpkins, both real and plastic. The real ones may be carved before Halloween night (weather permitting!), while the plastic light-up pumpkins add a lovely glow once the sun goes down.
It’s simple, seasonal, and perfectly us — a mix of spooky and cosy that brings Halloween to life without needing to spend much at all.

Brockville’s Sweet Little Tradition
Last Saturday, we got to experience something really special — the Trick or Treat on King Street event in Brockville. The town puts it on every year, and it’s such a lovely way for little ones to enjoy Halloween in a safe, fun setting. Local shops hand out treats, and the atmosphere is so cheerful and community-driven.
It only runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but honestly, that’s plenty of time for the little ones (and parents!) to enjoy it before nap time hits. My daughter had such a great time wandering through town, spotting other kids in costumes, and saying her sweet little “trick or treat!” to the shop owners.
(I won’t be sharing photos from this event here since I already posted about it on Instagram, but it was such a lovely experience worth mentioning!)
A Rainy Halloween Ahead?
As for tomorrow — the big day — the weather forecast isn’t looking too promising. It might rain, so our trick-or-treating could end up being a quick dash or maybe even a cosy night in instead. Either way, I’m ready to make it special.
If we stay home, we’ll light a few lanterns, pop on some Halloween music, and enjoy a few treats while watching something fun together. Sometimes, the best Halloween nights are the ones spent warm and dry indoors, surrounded by that spooky glow of candles and fairy lights.
Keeping It Simple and Cosy
One thing I’ve really learned as a mum is that seasonal decorating doesn’t have to be about doing more — it’s about doing just enough to create the feeling you want.
A few well-placed decorations, some soft lighting, and the excitement in your child’s eyes are really all it takes. I’ve found that keeping things simple helps the season feel less stressful and more joyful — especially when there’s less clutter to worry about.
So whether you’re going all-out this Halloween or keeping it low-key like us, I hope you find a little magic in the moments — from hanging up those decorations to sneaking a few treats (because let’s be honest, we all do it!).
Happy Halloween from our home to yours — may it be spooky, sweet, and full of memories you’ll want to relive every year. 🎃
