I hope you’re all doing well and are noticing the leaves slowly changing. As summer fades and the crispness of autumn sets in, there’s a palpable shift in the air. While January 1st marks the traditional new year, the arrival of fall brings its own sense of renewal. The vibrant colors of changing leaves, the scent of pumpkin spice, and the anticipation of seasonal events make this time of year feel like a fresh start.

A Personal Reflection

Growing up in Mississauga, I often heard the radio commercials for the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Each announcement was a bittersweet reminder that summer was drawing to a close. The thought of kids returning to school and the inevitable approach of winter cast a shadow over the excitement. Yet, there’s something about autumn that transforms that sadness into a sense of anticipation and renewal.

Local Events That Celebrate the Season

Autumn in our community is marked by a series of events that bring people together and celebrate the season’s bounty.

170th Spencerville Fair – September 11–14, 2025

This year, the Spencerville Fair celebrates its 170th anniversary, making it a milestone event. On Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 PM, the world-renowned RCMP Musical Ride will perform live at the fairgrounds. This is a rare opportunity, as Spencerville is the only fair in Ontario scheduled to host the Musical Ride in the summer and fall of 2025.

Beyond the musical performance, the fair offers a variety of attractions, including livestock shows, homecraft competitions, and live entertainment. It’s a celebration of rural traditions and community spirit.

Fall For Merrickville – October 11, 2025

Just a short drive away, Merrickville hosts its annual Fall For Merrickville event on Thanksgiving Saturday. From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Heritage Stables, the event features over 100 handmade vendors, offering everything from farm-fresh produce and pumpkins to artisanal crafts and treats. Activities include hay wagon rides, a mechanical bull, pony meet & greets, live music, face painting, and a petting zoo. Food trucks and a pancake breakfast add to the festive atmosphere.

Embracing the Season at Home

Autumn is also a time to connect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season. Here are some ideas to make the most of this time of year:

  • Gardening and Harvesting: If you have a small vegetable garden, now is the time to harvest the last of your crops. Consider planting fall vegetables like kale or spinach, or prepare your garden for the next growing season.

  • Seasonal Cooking: Autumn is synonymous with comfort food. Try baking a homemade apple pie, roasting root vegetables, or making a hearty soup to warm up on chilly evenings.brockvilleist.com

  • Outdoor Activities: Take advantage of the crisp air by going for walks in the park, visiting a local pumpkin patch, or enjoying a scenic drive to admire the fall foliage.

  • Seasonal Crafts: Engage in DIY projects like making a fall wreath, creating a scarecrow for your yard, or crafting homemade candles to add warmth to your home.

Why Autumn Feels Like the Real New Year

Autumn offers a unique blend of reflection and renewal. As the middle of the year approaches its close, the changing leaves, cooling air, and golden sunlight provide a natural moment to pause, evaluate, and set intentions. Many people find that autumn is the ideal time to try something new, embark on a small personal project, or simply slow down and enjoy life’s simpler pleasures.
