This year, we celebrated a milestone that felt magical—my daughter’s birthday! We chose to host her special day at the Aquatarium in Brockville, a place filled with fun, learning, and adventure. It was the perfect venue: playful otters, underwater exhibits, a soft play area, and an overall marine theme that matched her imagination. Plus, as members, we already knew how much she loved the space. The location was also super convenient for family and friends, which made planning even easier.
Of course, one of the things I was most excited about (aside from the cake!) was dressing her up for her big day. After browsing store after store with no luck, I finally found the perfect outfit on Amazon—a gorgeous mermaid-style dress that immediately caught my eye. The colors were dreamy, with pastel hues that shimmered just enough to feel magical without being over-the-top.
When I first showed it to her, her face lit up and she exclaimed, “My mermaid dress!” She was completely in love with the colors and couldn’t wait to wear it. That reaction alone was worth every second spent searching.
To complete the look, we added a “Birthday Girl” badge, sparkly white shoes, and warm, cozy stockings—a must for an end-of-March birthday in Ontario. Since the weather was still chilly, I also included a small shrug for an extra layer of warmth without hiding her dress. It all came together beautifully and—most importantly—kept her comfortable throughout the party.
Because when you’re dressing a toddler, comfort is absolutely key.
What to know
No matter how cute an outfit is, if it’s itchy, stiff, or too tight, it won’t last the day (or the hour, really). That’s why I made sure her dress was made of soft material, with enough stretch and room for her to move around. She was able to run, jump, twirl, and—her favorite part—play with water and sand with her classmates at the Aquatarium. Watching her light up while splashing and exploring was the best part of the day for me.
Our guests loved the look too—many commented on how fitting her dress was for the under-the-sea theme. She truly looked like a little mermaid exploring her oceanic kingdom.
A few toddler birthday outfit tips I’d share:
-
Test the outfit ahead of time: We did a mini try-on a few days before, just to make sure she liked the feel of it.
-
Layer wisely: A shrug or cardigan can make all the difference when the weather is unpredictable.
-
Don’t forget functional shoes: We went with sparkly ones that were both cute and comfy.
-
Always pack a backup outfit—because toddlers are unpredictable (especially around water and cake).
-
When in doubt, check Amazon: I couldn’t find what I wanted in local stores, and Amazon saved the day. As a friend recently said, “What would we do without Amazon?”
It was such a memorable day—not just for the decorations, the cake, or the venue—but because she felt confident, comfortable, and so full of joy.
If you’re planning your toddler’s next birthday and wondering what they should wear, my advice is simple: let them feel like the star of the day, but never at the cost of comfort. Because the best outfit is the one they can actually enjoy their day in.
Have you ever dressed your little one in a theme outfit for their birthday? What did they wear—and how did it go? I’d love to hear your stories, tips, or even funny outfit mishaps in the comments below!
