Hello and welcome to my new blogging topics about blogging as a single mum. I’ll be running these blogs at the same time as my “Spring Reset Series”. Starting a blog as a single mum wasn’t something I had perfectly planned out. In the beginning, it was honestly about making a bit of extra money on the side. But somewhere along the way, it became so much more than that. It became a space for me to share my thoughts, connect with other single mums, and give myself a creative outlet during a time when I felt like I was starting fresh.
If you’re thinking about starting a blog yourself, I want you to know — you don’t need to have it all figured out.
Starting From Scratch (In More Ways Than One)
When I first started, my daughter was 3 years old. Life felt like it was shifting, and I needed something that was mine. Something that wasn’t just about routines, responsibilities, and getting through the day.
Blogging gave me that.
At the time, I wasn’t working, but I was volunteering a couple of times a week. My daughter was in daycare, which gave me a bit of breathing room to actually sit down and write. That’s when I started putting my thoughts into blog posts — just getting everything out of my head and onto the screen.
Choosing Where to Start
I signed up with Bluehost and built my site using WordPress
This wasn’t actually my first attempt at blogging. I tried in my twenties, but I gave up pretty quickly. I didn’t have a web designer, and trying to figure everything out on my own felt overwhelming. I couldn’t get the site to look the way I wanted, and I got frustrated.
This time around, I approached it differently.
Instead of aiming for perfect, I focused on starting.
I wrote several blog posts first, gathered ideas, and looked at other bloggers for inspiration. That made a huge difference — it gave me direction without the pressure of having everything perfect right away.
The Reality No One Talks About
One of the biggest challenges I didn’t expect?
The lack of followers.
It’s hard putting your thoughts out there and feeling like no one is reading. And if I’m being honest, I still catch myself comparing my journey to other bloggers.
That self-doubt creeps in more often than I’d like to admit.
But what kept me going were the small wins — the comments from friends and family, the first bits of engagement, and knowing that someone was connecting with what I was writing.
What Blogging Has Given Me
Over time, blogging became more than just a side project.
It gave me:
-
A creative outlet
-
A way to express myself
-
A sense of connection
Sometimes it feels like you’re just talking to other mums who get it. Sharing the highs, the chaos, and everything in between.
And as a single mum, that kind of connection is powerful.
My Advice for Other Single Mums Starting a Blog
If you’re sitting there thinking, “I don’t know where to start” or “I’m not good enough”, I promise you — you’re not alone in that feeling.
Here’s what I would say:
1. Research, research, research
Look at other blogs. See what you like, what you don’t, and what inspires you.
2. Plan ahead (even loosely)
You don’t need a full strategy, but having a few ideas ready makes it easier to stay consistent.
3. Just start — even if it’s messy
Your first posts won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. You’ll grow as you go.
Balancing Blogging and Mum Life
These days, life looks a bit different. I’m working now, so blogging fits into the evenings or quiet weekends at home.
It’s not always perfectly scheduled.
Sometimes it’s done in small pockets of time, sometimes when I’m tired — but it’s something I’ve chosen to keep for myself.
Because at the end of the day, blogging isn’t just about building something.
It’s about having something that’s yours.
Final Thoughts
Starting a blog as a single mum isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.
For me, it started as a way to make money. But it turned into something much more meaningful — a space where I can be creative, reflect on my journey, and connect with others who understand this life.
And if you’re thinking about starting one too?
Take this as your sign to begin.
