The 90s Teen Me
Some of my earliest style memories take me back to the 1990s, in my teens, when fashion felt fun, experimental, and sometimes a little rebellious. I’ve included a picture of one of my favourite outfits from that time: colourful flower leggings paired with ankle boots—each lace a different colour—a crisp white top, a leather jacket, and a baseball cap worn backwards. Accessories were everything back then: butterfly clips, baby Suther necklaces, and ponytail holders. My hair was long, sometimes cut to shoulder length, usually worn simple in a ponytail, but I loved the occasional tall, clunky heels reminiscent of the Spice Girls.
Pop culture heavily influenced my style—Spice Girls’ bold looks, Blossom’s quirky outfits, and the playful, colourful energy of the time. I also flirted with a goth-inspired look, drawn to the edgy, rebellious vibe, though it was never fully “me.” It was more of a fun experiment than a defining style.
Transitioning Into Practicality
As I moved into my twenties, my style naturally shifted toward practicality and comfort. Outfits became more functional for everyday life—school, work, and later motherhood—and less about chasing trends. I learned a few lessons along the way; for instance, the combination of a midriff top with a black skirt wasn’t flattering on me at all, and I quickly retired that look.
Comfort began to outweigh all else. Clothing was no longer just about appearance—it was about moving freely, feeling relaxed, and fitting seamlessly into my life.
Embracing Classic and Comfy
These days, my wardrobe leans toward classic, timeless pieces with a practical edge. Brands like Holland Cooper have become a staple for me—their silhouettes and designs remind me of my UK roots and the elegance I admire.
Even on a casual day, my outfit choices reflect this philosophy. As I write this, I’m sitting in track pants and a black sport T-shirt, perfectly comfortable and relaxed—a far cry from my teen experimentation, but exactly what I value now. For fall and winter, I often reach for leggings or cozy layered pieces, combining comfort with style effortlessly.
While black dominates my wardrobe, I occasionally inject colour to keep things lively. I also draw inspiration from Instagram profiles like Christa Gish, Caitlin Coving, and Julie Hannah, whose aesthetics align with my love for sophisticated simplicity.
My Style Philosophy
If I had to describe my style in three words, they would be: sophisticated, comfy, and casual. My outfits reflect sensibility and practicality more than flashy trends. There are no strict “rules”—mostly, I let intuition guide me, though I do aspire to add more classic, Audrey Hepburn-inspired looks into my rotation, channeling that effortless elegance from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
As my lifestyle continues to evolve, so too will my style. For now, it’s a balance of comfort, practicality, and timeless pieces that make me feel like myself—confident, sensible, and a little bit chic.
