A Day at the Canadian Museum of Nature
Last Friday, as my daughter had the day off daycare, we decided to make the most of it with a little adventure — my mum, my daughter, and I headed to the Canadian Museum of Nature. It was our first time taking her to a museum, and in her sweet little mind, she believed we’d be seeing real-life dinosaurs!
A Little Inspiration
The idea actually came from another parent at daycare who had recently shared photos from their own visit. I love when inspiration comes that way — one mum to another — because sometimes it takes seeing another family’s experience to spark your own plans.
The Day of Our Visit
When we first arrived, my daughter’s excitement was contagious. Her eyes grew wide at the sight of the large building and all the displays inside. From the moment we stepped in, she was curious about everything — pulling both my mum and me by the hand toward anything that caught her attention.
The butterfly exhibit was definitely one of the highlights, though it was quite a small space and fairly busy. Still, she stayed close and was mesmerized by the butterflies fluttering around. The dinosaur gallery was another big hit — she was absolutely thrilled and kept asking if the dinosaurs were real. It was such a heartwarming reminder of the wonder of seeing the world through a child’s eyes.
Family-Friendly and Accessible
I was impressed with how stroller- and child-friendly the museum was. There’s a small elevator near the entrance and plenty of ramps and elevators throughout, which made it easy to get around.
The café (pictured below) was a lovely spot to pause for lunch and take a break. We grabbed a few sandwiches and a small pizza for my daughter — though I’d recommend packing your own food if possible, as the prices can add up quickly. There’s also a spacious washroom area, complete with an adult changing room, which made things much easier with a toddler in tow.
Budget Tip for Ontario Parents
One of the best discoveries I made during this trip was that many local libraries across Ontario offer free museum passes. This was actually my first time borrowing a pass — a friend mentioned it to me, and it turned out to be such a great idea. If we hadn’t, the day would have been quite costly between entry fees, exhibit tickets, snacks, and parking (around $70).
So before planning a visit, definitely check your local library’s website or give them a call. Many libraries, including those in Ottawa, Kingston, and Brockville, participate in programs that let families borrow passes to museums and conservation areas for free. It’s a wonderful way to make family adventures more affordable.
A Mum Moment
For me, the best part of the day was simply watching my daughter’s amazement. Even now, a few days later, she’s still talking about the dinosaurs and butterflies and asking when we can go back. Seeing her so engaged and joyful made the whole day feel truly special — and sharing it with my mum made it even more memorable.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a fun and educational outing for your little ones, I absolutely recommend the Canadian Museum of Nature. It’s engaging, accessible, and filled with exhibits that spark curiosity in both kids and adults alike. And if you can, try to visit on a weekday — it’s quieter, and booking your butterfly exhibit time slot in advance helps the day run smoothly.
Sometimes the best adventures start with a simple idea shared by another parent — and this one turned out to be one we’ll remember for a long time.
