Autumn is such a magical season. The crisp air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the slower pace that naturally comes after summer all make it the perfect time to reset. As mums, it’s easy to put our own needs last, but self-care doesn’t have to be big or expensive—it’s often the simple, everyday habits that make the biggest difference.

Here are five low-cost (or free!) autumn self-care habits every mum deserves to enjoy.

1. Take Slow Seasonal Walks

One of the best things about autumn is simply being outside. The colours of the leaves, the cooler air, and even the smell of the season make it the perfect backdrop for slowing down. Walking doesn’t just benefit your body—it’s a chance to clear your mind, breathe deeply, and reset.

I recently went for a walk with my daughter in Brockville through the Brockville Railway Tunnel. Even though it’s enclosed, the cool, crispy air that drifts through the tunnel and the water dripping along the walls added so much to the autumn feel.

If your little one enjoys walking too, turn it into a bonding ritual. Let them crunch in the leaves, collect pinecones, or simply explore while you soak in the moment. If you’re usually quick to drive, try walking instead—it’s a small change that feels grounding.

2. Refresh Your Skincare Routine

Self-care doesn’t always mean big gestures—it can be as simple as taking care of your skin. Autumn air can be drying, so this is the perfect season to refresh your skincare routine. Even just a few minutes with a face exfoliating brush or a nourishing moisturizer can feel like a reset in the middle of a busy day.

I also recently bought a collection of face masks. I have fond memories of using them, and while I’m not 100% sure if they all do what they promise, I like to think they help in some way. Even if it’s just the ritual of slowing down for ten minutes, it’s worth it.

Think of it as a little pause just for you—a reminder that your wellbeing matters too.

3. Embrace Cozy Rituals at Home

Autumn naturally lends itself to cozy moments. While your home doesn’t need a full seasonal makeover, sprinkling in a few autumn touches can shift the mood. A seasonal wreath on the door, a pumpkin by the table, or even a cozy blanket for chilly mornings makes the season feel special.

Lighting a candle, sipping a hot tea, or playing soft music can turn an ordinary evening into a mini ritual of calm—something that feels both seasonal and soothing.

4. Seasonal Activities That Bring Joy

Pumpkin picking, apple orchards, leaf piles—autumn is full of simple activities that double as self-care. They get you outside, give you fresh air, and help create memories with your little one. Sometimes self-care is less about escaping mum-life and more about finding joy in it.

On October 11th, we’ll be going to Merrickville to experience the Fall for Merrickville festival. We went last year and thought it was lovely. This year, there seems to be even more posted about it on Facebook, so I’m looking forward to it even more.

Plus, fresh air can be a natural defense during “cold season,” especially when little ones seem to pick up every sniffle that comes around.

5. Move Your Body—Gently

Exercise often feels like a big commitment, but in autumn, it can be redefined. Movement doesn’t have to mean gym memberships or structured workouts. It can be as simple as stretching while your child plays, doing a short yoga video at home, or walking instead of driving when possible.

I’ve recently decided to walk more than use the car. Just last weekend, my daughter and I went on a beautiful walk around Blockhouse Island and through the tunnel. It reminded me how good it feels to simply move and explore. I would definitely encourage people to venture around where you live—you might be surprised at how refreshing it feels.

The key is consistency, not perfection. Even small bursts of movement can lift your mood, boost your energy, and remind you that your body deserves care too.

Final Thought

Autumn is a reminder to slow down and embrace the beauty in simple things. Self-care doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Whether it’s a walk in the crisp air, a cozy moment at home, or a few minutes for your skin, these small habits can make this season feel restorative.

Every mum deserves that. 💛
