Potty training isn’t always straightforward, and the potty training ups and downs are real. My daughter is now three years old, and we started our journey around 2½. Some days feel like big progress, while other days seem to take us several steps backward. Sharing this journey, I hope other mums feel encouraged and less alone in the messy, unpredictable path of toddlerhood.
We began after seeing other children at her daycare successfully using the bathroom. I bought a small potty chair, which has become her safe space. She has tried the main toilet a couple of times but hasn’t taken to it yet.
Celebrating the Wins in Potty Training Ups and Downs
Even with setbacks, the small victories make all the difference. Recently, she managed to do both number one and number two in her potty—a huge milestone for us! We celebrated with praise and stickers, and she jumped up and down to share her excitement.
Her natural routine helps too: mornings are usually her “number one” time, and evenings before bed tend to trigger number two. Using training underwear with a gusset and staying consistent at home has made this process more manageable.
Navigating the Struggles
Of course, the potty training ups and downs include accidents—lots of them. On hard days, it can feel like we’re moving backward instead of forward. We still rely on diapers for outings, and I have a foldable toilet seat that we haven’t used yet outside the home.
Routines like sitting on the potty before naps or bedtime work sometimes, but not always. And I have to admit, frustration hits hard. I’ve felt disappointed and even punished her at times when I thought she was being lazy. But I remind myself that persistence is key, even on the rough days.
Lessons Learned Through Potty Training Ups and Downs
If there’s one takeaway, it’s to just keep trying. Progress may feel slow, but every small win adds up. Being consistent helps, but flexibility is equally important. Most importantly, I’ve learned that every “accident” is part of the learning process, and patience is essential.
